Saturday, 31 August 2024
Experience contemporary Dutch art in a Frisian farm from 1821. This summer, Dijken, next to Langweer, will host the premiere of a small-scale art event: Art Weiland. Four Amsterdam galleries bring a careful selection of artworks by emerging and renowned Dutch artists to Friesland. All art lovers from the surrounding area are welcome on Sunday, 1 September, to admire art in all its versatility, from paintings to sculptures, and to purchase them if interested. The artists themselves are also present. Entrance is free.
Art Weiland is an initiative of the Amsterdam-Frisian Kreek-Weidenaar family and the Amsterdam gallery Brinkman & Bergsma of Frits Bergsma and Jacko Brinkman. The latter two organise more events in special places: they are also the founders of Art Island, an art fair that has been held on Fort Island near IJmuiden since 2022.
“Art connects and we would like to contribute to the community with Art Weiland,” say Jorrit Kreek and Yelly Weidenaar. They open their historic farmhouse in Dijken more often for cultural activities, in the tradition of the previous resident who was the Queen's Commissioner at the time.
During Art Weiland, the four participating galleries will each show new works by two artists they represent. Brinkman & Bergsma presents, among others, the 'dot artist' Peim van der Sloot, who plays with the relationship between art and money. He does this by creating works of art with the red stickers used at fairs to indicate that something has been sold.
GoMulan Gallery will show painted self-portraits with magical realistic features by Jonat Deelstra during the event. While GoMulan is an emerging gallery, TORCH Gallery is one of the veterans: they are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. They present artworks by TINKEBELL, who has been attracting a lot of attention with her activist art for 20 years. TORCH also shows the almost-abstract paintings with references to nature by Krijn Kroes.
Artist Koos Buster has been successful in recent years with his playful variations on everyday objects such as fire extinguishers, beer crates and bottles of cleaning products, made from ceramic. His work can be seen at Art Weiland at the Vriend van Bavink gallery, together with the surreal and highly detailed drawings of Tja Ling Hu.
